This evening we take a walk through New Jersey, with The Fox and The Hare Photography as they capture the engagement of Kerry and Lawrence. This dynamic duo strolled through Asbury Park and on to browse through the vinyls at Holdfast Record Shop, yes the very same store where Springsteen got his start! They played some tunes, took a spin on the turntable and ended the evening with a spectacular sunset over the beach and Broadwalk. Keep reading as we chat to Kerry about their story, the all-important proposal and their plans for their wedding day.
Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?
We started working together at a small tech company on the same day in June of twenty fourteen. We were both a bit shy at first but started opening up to each other at one company happy hour where The Lord of the Rings was the topic of conversation. We realized we were both huge fans (and huge nerds), and our friendship started to grow. We spent the next few months getting to know each other, going out to lunch, filling each other in on new bands, and throwing glances across the office. We “showed our hands” at the company holiday party that January and learned that we were both interested in each other all along. Now we’ve been dating ever since, and we're getting married almost 5 years to the day that we first met!
Tell us some things that you both value in your time and what makes your relationship unique and special to you both?
Since we met, we've been pushing each other to try new things. Shortly after we started dating, we began scheming about where we could move to start an adventure together. A great job opportunity and a thirst for new experiences landed us in Portland, OR! We were quickly fascinated by the food culture and eclectic music scene in Portland, and we spend a lot of our free time enjoying new cuisines and great music in the company of friends. We did not expect to fall in love with the outdoors, but after getting a taste of the natural wonders of Oregon and Washington, we now seek new experiences in the outdoors as well!
Lawrence, How and when did you know your Kerry was the one?
She bought me a rare copy of leaves of grass by Walt Whitman for our first date and I knew something was different about her. I had never met someone so thoughtful and heartfelt. We have amazing conversations and are always laughing. My weird matches your weird and you care about a lot of the same things I do, like live music, beer, having new experiences, and pushing yourself to always be better. Since we started dating I just always felt like you were someone who saw the person that I wanted to be.
Kerry, How and when did you know your Lawrence was the one?
We had been dating for a few weeks when I realized that I had been spending time with Lawrence both at work and outside of work almost every day for months, and I still couldn't get enough of him! It was like his life mission was to make me ugly-laugh. His charming personality was absolutely contagious, and we kept discovering more and more mutual interests between us until I fell head over heels!
We are all about romance, so give us all the details of the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise?
Inspired by our love for Tolkein (and each other), we scheduled a trip to Northern Washington State to a hole in a ground, where we planned on spending the weekend living like Hobbits. There is a tiny home near the stunning Lake Chelan that was modelled after the Hobbit homes from the Lord of the Rings movie, and it was there, just upon arrival, that Lawrence popped the question. Afterwards, we enjoyed a romantic, secluded weekend in wine country and I finally had that "One ring to rule them all!"
We’re not going to lie, we love the bling! so tell us all about that ring!
The ring was a complete surprise for me! Lawrence picked out the design himself, and I could not be happier with the classic style. Lawrence told me that he had to pick it as "it sparkled like your eyes"
Are you excited to start planning your wedding day? Do you have any ideas in mind yet?
We are so excited to have all of our family and friends in one place to celebrate us on our wedding day! At the beginning of our relationship when we lived in New Jersey, we enjoyed spending time in the summers down the Shore, especially catching shows in Asbury Park. We are hoping to emphasize the historic/1920s features of the Convention Hall while tying in our own retro/rock n roll style. We cannot wait to have our wedding celebration in a place that means so much to us and at a venue that is so iconic!
